Pulitzer-prize winning author of  "To Kill a Mockingbird", Nelle Harper Lee, has passed away, Mashable reports.

The author was 89 and a resident of Monroeville, Alabama. Her passing was originally reported by local newspaper, Alabama Media Group.

Ms. Lee passed away in her sleep early Friday morning at The Meadows, an assisted living facility.

Lee's classic American novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" was first published in 1960.

Last year, Harper was back in the spotlight with the release of "Go Set a Watchmen", set two decades after "To Kill a Mockingbird", that's said to have been written in the 1950s, before the landmark novel.

Random House tweeted condolences in regard to the passing of Lee, saying, "Today we lost a beautiful writer. RIP Harper Lee."
