Over the weekend, amid the howling wind and pouring rain, someone did the unthinkable - abandoned a carboard box full of puppies on the side of the road.

Eight Puppies Abandoned on Roadside During Storm in Holland

While that is horrible and heartbreaking, what happened next makes me feel better about humanity.

According to Harbor Humane Society, on Saturday evening, a Good Samaritan called police, alerting them to the puppies left shivering in the cold and rain on the roadside in Holland.

An Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputy responded and rescued the puppies from the side of 120th Avenue, near New Holland Brewing Company.

Harbor Humane says the puppies are only about four weeks old and would not have survived the night in the harsh weather conditions.

When they took in the animals, they were soaking wet with low temperatures. They warmed the puppies, giving them care and attention - and now six have been taken into foster homes.

Two of the puppies are still in critical condition and are being monitored closely by a Harbor Humane staff member.

Harbor Humane Society is now looking for the person who dumped the puppies:

We are currently looking for any information about who may have abandoned these puppies.  It breaks our hearts that things happened this way. Had they reached out to Harbor, we would have been more than willing to help, and this dangerous situation could have been avoided. Please remember, Harbor is always there for the community as a resource- we are just a phone call or a message away. We never want to see an animal abandoned and truly will never turn away a person or pet in a real emergency, even when we are bursting at the seams.

When Will the Harbor Humane Puppies Be Ready for Adoption?

The humane society is currently focusing on getting the puppies healthy and says at this time they cannot answer questions about adopting them - however, you can stay updated on the puppies' story by following Harbor Humane Society on Facebook.
