Grand Valley and Calvin University earned high regional rankings in a survey conducted by US News and World Report magazine.

The publication annually rates colleges and universities nationwide on value, innovation and academics.

Grand Valley State University's growing reputation got another shot in the arm this week, as it scored a high ranking in US News' annual survey of colleges.

GVSU was ranked third in the Midwest for public schools, and 27th overall in the listing. US News and World Report had this to say about GVSU:

Located just outside of the Grand Rapids area, Michigan’s second-largest metropolitan region, is Grand Valley State University. Although it is one of America’s 100 largest universities in terms of enrollment, Grand Valley strives to make a liberal education its foundation for all of its academic programs. Freshmen are exposed to more than 300 student organizations during an event called “Campus Life Night,” which allows students to explore the many options for extracurricular activities. About 5 percent of the undergraduate community participates in Greek life, and there are more than 20 chapters to choose from. While it is not required, the university recommends that all first year students live on campus to more easily become involved in campus life.

Two other state public schools earned high rankings in the public schools survey, with UM-Dearborn coming in at number five, and Northern Michigan University coming in at number 20.

Calvin, meanwhile finished fourth among ALL universities in the Midwest region. US News ranked Calvin 3rd in undergraduate teaching and 15th in innovation. Grand Valley ranked 27th overall in the Midwest University category.

Kettering University in Flint (the former General Motors Institute) finished 12th.
