"Outside" is the third single from Sonic Highways, Foo Fighterrs' 8th album, for which they travelled the country, recording in different cities, and documented in a series by the same name.

They talked to with musicians, producers, and others involved with the city's music scene, and the interviews inspired song lyrics, which the Foo Fighters then recorded at a local studio along with a musician with ties to that city.

"Outside" is the result of the Foo Fighter's time in Los Angeles and the desert outside of it.

Dave Grohl said to Rolling Stone,

"You know how you explore the history of music in Los Angeles? You get out of Los Angeles."

The Foo Fighter's headed to Rancho de la Luna in Joshua Tree to record "Outside".

Grohl explained to Rolling Stone,

"I didn't want to focus on all of those iconic studios like Ocean Way Recording or Record Plant and the decades of history and industry in the city. I wanted to get outside of that because that's how I feel when I'm there. It can be overwhelming in Los Angeles. It can get to you. I didn't want to focus on the glitz and glamour because that's what people usually focus on."

The Foo Fighters picked Eagle's guitarist Joe Walsh to play on "Outside", who told Rolling Stone,

"I got to be a Foo Fighter for a couple of days. You have to be in a good mood around those guys. It's wonderful energy."
