Ford Field Is Not Only Home Field For The Lions But 2 USFL Teams
Ford Field has been the home for the Detroit Lions for 23 years and will now share it with USFL teams.
United States Football League
The United States Football League (USFL) got its start in 1983 and only lasted 3 seasons.
The Michigan Panthers were the USFL team that played at the Pontiac Silverdome. Winning the championship game in 1983 beating the Philadelphia Stars 24-22. The Panthers made it to the playoffs in 1984 but lost to the Los Angeles Express 27-21 in the longest professional football game in history that had 3 overtimes with a game time of 93 minutes and 33 seconds. This would wind up being the Panther's last game until the USFL came back in 2022.
The USFL went away in 1986 when it was attempting to go up against the NFL as a direct competitor.
USFL Returned in 2022
The USFL made a comeback in 2022 as did the Michigan Panthers brand. There are 7 other teams in the league that include the Birmingham Stallions, Houston Gamblers, New Jersey Generals, New Orleans Breakers, Philadelphia Stars, Pittsburgh Maulers, and the Tampa Bay Bandits. Many former NFL players and coaches are a part of the league.
Two USFL Teams Will Make Ford Field Their Home in 2023
Come the spring of 2023, it won't be only concerts and events that will be held at Ford Field, now two USFL teams will call it home.
The Michigan Panthers is one of the teams and it makes perfect sense seeing how the Detroit Lions and Panthers once shared the Pontiac Silverdome.
I am a little confused with the other team that will call Ford Field home which is the Philadelphia Stars. This is common in the USFL since they do not have stadiums dedicated to their brands but if the league is successful you never say never.
Football Fans Have a Lot to See At Ford Field
With the Detroit Lions finishing strong in the last season and now the Michigan Panthers and Philidelphia Stars moving into Ford Field, football fans have a lot to look forward to in 2023.
