The number of people sick from a Salmonella outbreak linked to fresh, whole, red, yellow, and white onions sold to restaurants and grocery stores continues to grow WZZM-13 reports.

This week the CDC said 892 people have become ill and 183 people have been hospitalized since the connection to onions was first reported on Oct. 20. Illnesses have been reported in 38 states, including Michigan.

At this point, multiple companies have recalled onions. The CDC says all recalled onions were supplied by ProSource Produce LLC and Keeler Family Farms and imported from Chihuahua, Mexico, between July 1, 2021, and August 31, 2021.

Brand names that the onions were sold under include:

  • Big Bull
  • Peak Fresh Produce
  • Sierra Madre
  • Markon First Crop.
  • Markon Essentials
  • Rio Blue
  • ProSource
  • Rio Valley
  • Sysco Imperial

Because of the shelf life of onions, up to 3 months if stored properly, there is concern they may still be in people's kitchens and in restaurants.

The CDC advises that you check your onions. If you have any recalled onions or if you can’t tell where your onions are from, don’t eat them. Throw them away. You should also wash all surfaces and containers these onions may have touched using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.

Most people infected with Salmonella experience diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Anyone with severe symptoms like a fever over 102°F or signs of dehydration should contact their health care provider. You can find more information on Salmonella here.
