Heads Up! Consumers Energy Planned Blackout This Weekend
Losing power any time of year is a major inconvenience, but losing power during freezing temps after a week of winter storms is enough to pull out a few extra blankets and clutch your pillow tight.
But have you ever heard of your energy service planning a blackout? That's what is happening this weekend when Consumers Energy, which serves 6.8 million of Michigan's 10 million residents, shuts off the power in Wayland around the state for a few hours.

Planned Outages
Over the weekend, Consumers Energy announced it would be shutting off the power in Wayland on December 7th from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on December 8th, claiming affected residents received postcards in the mail to let residents know their power was going to be shut off overnight.
At the time of posting, there isn't any snow projected for this weekend but temperatures are expected to fall into freezing temps overnight between Saturday and Sunday. The Wayland Fire Department has invited residents to take shelter there if they need a warm place to stay.

However, the need to offer a place to stay warm does bring up the question of why Consumer's Energy is choosing to perform this outage when it is so cold. According to an interview done by WOODTV 8, Consumer's spokesman Brian Wheeler said these outages are scheduled for weekends and nighttime so it is as undisruptive as possible.
As Wheeler puts it, "There is never a good time for a power outage." Consumers also performed a planned outage in Flint overnight Friday into Saturday.
