UPDATE (7/6/21 12:30 p.m.): The Wyoming Police have confirmed that the leak has been contained and both the shelter in place and evacuation orders have been lifted for the area.

ORIGINAL STORY: Not sure of the cause but there is an ammonia leak that is in Wyoming but citizens are being asked to evacuate the area.

According to WOOD, the ammonia leak is located in the 500 block of 32nd Street SE.

The area that is being evacuated is between Eastern Avenue and Roger B Chaffee Boulevard and 32nd Street SE and 36th Street Se. People are being asked to move north of 32nd Street SE.

If you live near the area above, you currently do not have to evacuate but authorities prefer you shelter in place until further notice. You are being asked to keep windows and doors closed and turn off ventilation systems.

There is no word at this time what has caused the ammonia leak but if you live or work in Wyoming, it is best to stay out of the area.

Even though ammonia is in many cleaning products, exposure to breathing in large amounts ammonia is highly dangerous.

Ammonia is a colorless highly irritating gas with a sharp suffocating odor. What makes ammonia so dangerous to humans is when you breathe it in, it reacts with the water in your body and produces ammonia hydroxide. This chemical is very corrosive and damages cells in the body on contact.

Swallowing ammonia can cause burns to the mouth, throat and stomach. Skin or eye contact with concentrated ammonia can also cause irritation and burns.
