ArtPrize Making Music From Driving Over Grates on Mackinac Bridge
Stop by Venue Tower Apartments during ArtPrize 10 and you'll have a chance to make your own music out of a sound nearly every Michigander either loves or hates, the sound of driving over the grates on Mackinac Bridge.
Artist Philip Rice has recorded the familiar sound of driving over the Mackinac Bridge into a keyboard which anyone can play. The entry is called Grate Lakes.
Rice's artist statement says "Grate Lakes invites you to consider the musical possibilities of everyday experiences and the unique timbre, frequency, and resonance of specific places, structures, enclosures, velocities."
A simple idea which is easily duplicated with modern technology, but the message it brings about the possibilities of where and how we manipulate sound to create music is worth remembering.
