100th St. Bridge Work Will Close 131 This Weekend
Well you have plans of heading south of Grand Rapids this weekend prepare for a detour as work will resume on the 100th Street bridge.
I was going to make a run to Battle Creek this weekend but looks like I will be making that trip sooner due to some bridgework on US 131.
For those who plan on using US 131, you will exit for the 100th Street exit and then just hop back on entrance ramp back to the freeway.
The detour onto 100th Street from US 131 will cause no access to 100th Street since sections of it are closed for bridge work and making the detour to bypass the bridge.
According to WOOD, the Michigan Department of Transportation says, hopefully mother nature cooperates and if so, 131 will shutdown beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday and will stay shut down until Monday morning at 5 a.m.
At least the detour isn't bad where you have to drive through town to get to the next available exit but odds are traffic on US 131 will be slowed in both directions because of it.
Normally this time of year we get an update on how many semis have hit the deck of the bridge and that is why there is a nearly $9 million project to replace the bridge. Road workers also will be making the bridge wider to increase traffic flow so this will be a pretty big overhaul to the 100th Street bridge.
Construction workers had been working on the project earlier in the spring but due to the spread of the coronavirus the operation had to be put on pause. Work on the bridge will last until October.
Personally, I was hoping this was just a weekend thing but unfortunately it is not. Depending how the traffic flow is north and south on US 131, if you travel frequently, you may want to map out your new route now to be one step a head of the traffic game.
