Woman Dies in Bicycle Accident on Mackinac Island
I've always thought that Mackinac Island was the safest place in Michigan to ride a bicycle but apparently, a woman has died in a terrible accident.
Mackinac Island Biking
Mackinac Island has been car-free since 1898, becoming one of Michigan's most popular biking destinations.
Mackinac Island has over 70 miles of paved and natural trails, including State Highway M-185 that wraps around the island. The ride around the island is 8.2 miles long and takes about an hour to get around if you don't stop for a selfie. There are great views of Lake Huron, the Mackinac Bridge, and Native American cultural history so good luck on the ride only taking an hour.
Visitors ride around the island, and through town, and can explore very easily on a bicycle. There are no cars or trucks to worry about. You can bring your own bike or even rent one when you get there. There are guided tours you can take on a bike too.

Woman Dies in Bicycle Accident on Mackinac Island
The only things a bicyclist will see on the Mackinac Island roads are other bicyclists, people walking, and horse-drawn carriages. According to WOOD, a 77-year-old woman from Oakland County was riding a bike when she unfortunately collided with one of the horse-drawn carriages. The woman was seriously injured but did not die at the scene.
Several were involved in trying to help the woman from hotel workers, people who live in the community, tourists, the Mackinac Island Fire Department, and the Michigan State Police. The woman who was rushed to a Petoskey hospital passed away from her injuries.
The crash is still being investigated.
