For years, people have been asking the same question: What’s going on with the old South Haven Big Boy?

If you’ve driven past on your way to Walmart or stopped for gas next door, you’ve probably noticed some changes at the long-shuttered restaurant.

And if you grew up in South Haven like I did (or even just visited), chances are you’ve got a few memories tied to that spot. I was obsessed with the salad bar, and who didn’t love the breakfast buffet? My best friend worked there in high school—and fun fact: my very first date ever happened at that Big Boy.

A Look Back at South Haven’s Big Boy History

Back in 2023, I shared that the Smith family, who had operated the restaurant for more than 26 years, had sold it. At the time, it sounded like Big Boy would continue under new ownership. Clearly, that didn’t happen. The building sat in limbo, and for a long time, locals kept wondering what would take its place.

Now we finally know.

El Nopal Mexican Grill & Bar Arrives

On September 18, the South Haven Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for El Nopal Mexican Grill & Bar at 261 73rd Street.

The restaurant is currently in its soft opening phase, with details on the grand opening coming soon—follow El Nopal on Facebook for updates.

El Nopal comes from the same team behind Los Ranchos Mexican Bar & Grill on Broadway Street in South Haven. (If you’ve had their fajitas, you know how good they are!) Now, they’re bringing bold Mexican flavors and a fresh, welcoming atmosphere to the former Big Boy.

Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Menus

Just like Ranchos Mexican Bar and Grill, you'll find a huge menu! The restaurant serves breakfast daily from 8 to 11 a.m., with dishes like huevos rancheros and the Jalisco Omelet. For lunch and dinner, you’ll find everything from tacos and enchiladas to chef-crafted entrées made with authentic spices and fresh ingredients.

There's also a full bar with margaritas and cocktails, making it a great spot for date night, girls’ night, or just a casual dinner out.

So while the Big Boy chapter has officially closed, the building is buzzing with life again—this time with a whole new flavor.
