Old U.S. Mail Truck For Sale
If you are looking for a unique project vehicle, how about an old U.S. Mail Jeep? Find out where you can locate this unique opportunity here.
History of U.S Mail Vehicles
Michigan's mail vehicles have come a long way since the first post office opened in Detroit on September 7, 1802. In the early days, horses were used to pull wagons and sleds to get the mail to homes and businesses.
The first mail vans ran on two-horse power. You can see a U.S. Mail fleet of horse drawn wagons (vans) to deliver the mail in the Lower Peninsula in the photo above. It wasn't until 1851 that there was mail service on Mackinac Island which was the main hub for northern Michigan for over 50 years.
Thanks to the invention of gasoline-powered vehicles, in the early 1900s the U.S. Mail started delivering the mail in trucks.
Since 1910, mail vehicles have evolved significantly. From Jeeps to the familiar boxy Grumman LLV, cargo vans, to modern electric/hybrid replacements.

Once Carried Your Mail-Now It Could Be Yours
When I was growing up as a kid in Michigan, the mail vehicle I saw on the road was the one made by Jeep. There were two models, the right-hand drive CJ-3A and DJ-5. These types of mail trucks were used from the 1950s through the 1980s.
Perhaps you like to restore vintage vehicles. This U.S. Mail Jeep is up for grabs on Facebook Marketplace. Yes, it looks rough, but use your imagination and this could be a pretty sweet ride at the next local car show.
The asking price is $1,500, but if you are a good haggler, I'm sure you could get the price down. It was listed 3 months ago and obviously would have to be trailered to get it back to your garage or pole barn.
The marketplace ad says it's all original with the engine and transmission still intact.

The only hitch I see on this deal is there's no title, but if you know your way around the DMV you should have no trouble getting a replacement title.
