Two Battle Creek Schools Closed Due to Nearby Shooting
A pair of Battle Creek schools were forced to close Thursday because of an area shooting.
Officials from Battle Creek said the shooting occurred around 6 a.m. Thursday near Springfield Middle School and Valley View Elementary School in Springfield. The Battle Creek Public Schools superintendent's office ordered both schools closed.
According to WOOD TV, Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority said they could not give any information about the shooting until a news release is sent out later Thursday morning. They do say that they do not believe that the public is in any danger, and that this was an isolated incident.
The district posted this statement on its website early this morning:
Springfield police have made us aware of an active shooter situation in the area. For the safety of our students and staff, Springfield Middle School and Valley View Elementary school will be closed today, April 12, 2018. Additionally, due to roads being blocked, transportation to other buildings from the Springfield area will not be available.
That statement was followed up by another some time later:
This is a message from Superintendent Carter with clarifying information concerning this morning’s event. After being contacted by law enforcement regarding a situation in the community, BCPS elected to close two of our schools—Valley View Elementary and Springfield Middle—for the safety and security of our students and staff. Although authorities have informed us that there is no active shooter situation at this time, they have blocked off several streets. As such, buses are unable to operate in the area. We believe it is in the best interests of our students and staff to refrain from travelling in the Springfield area at this time. The safety and security of our students and staff is paramount and we will provide updates as we receive additional information. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
This is a developing story so please check back to wgrd.com for updates.
