Twin Polar Bears Born At Detroit Zoo

It's a huge AWWWW moment! An 8 year old Polar Bear has given birth to 2 cubs at The Detroit Zoo.

Suka, the momma polar bear, gave birth to the twins back in November, however the announcement was just released as one of the cubs had health issues. That same cub will be raised by humans.

The unnamed twin cubs are the first polar bears to be born and raised in the zoo in 15 years. Suka had given birth in 2018 and 2019 but those cubs did not survive. Suka has been described as an attentive mom.

Suka gave birth in a specially-designed, private maternity den that's equipped with infrared video cameras. Staff initially saw the female cub inactive and appearing weak. The female cub was taken to the Detroit Zoo’s Ruth Roby Glancy Animal Health Complex for care. It's not known if the cub will be able to rejoin her mother. The zoo staff's around-the-clock care and bottle feeding schedule helped the female cub gain weight.

Visitors to the zoo are unable to see the cubs at this time. They are being cared for in a private, behind-the-scenes area. According to the Detroit Zoo, under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, polar bears are listed as threatened.
