Three For Three! GR Girls Teams Advance In State Playoffs
All three area teams battling for spots in the Final Fours of their respective Divisions won Tuesday, leading to this weekend's semi-finals.
Rockford Will Face West Bloomfield Friday
The Rockford Rams ended East Lansing's 11-game win streak in the Division 1 quarterfinals with a convincing 54-43 take down in Tuesday at Calvin's Van Noord Arena.
This is the farthest any Rockford team has advanced in the state tournament.
"It was amazing beating Hudsonville (in the regional final), but we knew this game would be just as hard, so we had to come in prepared for battle and I think we did," Alyssa Wypych told FOX 17 after the win.
The Rams, who are now 23-2 on the season, will tip it off with West Bloomfield (23-1) Friday at noon at MSU's Breslin Center.
West Catholic Rolls Over Edwardsburg
The Falcons were never threatened in their Division 2 quarterfinal at Wayland Union, dispatching of Edwardsburg, 82-27. It was the Eddies only loss of the season.
"These girls have worked so hard all season long. There's been challenges all season long, (with the team) being so young, and they've just been resilient and persevered. They've never given up and they've just kept pushing," Head Coach Jill Vanderende told FOX 17's Sports Blitz following the win.
The Falcons will now square off with perennial power Detroit Country Day at 5:30pm Friday in the state semi-finals at the Breslin Center.
Kent City Gets Shot At Redemption
The Kent City Eagles, state Division 3 runners-up a year ago, will get another shot at a state title, when they play again in the semi-finals Thursday at the Breslin against Madison Heights Bishop Foley out of the Detroit Catholic League.
The Eagles lost to Grass Lake 52-20 in the 2021 D3 title game.
Kent City earned their berth in the semis with a tight 34-33 win over Schoolcraft.
It was a tight contest the whole way, and Schoolcraft had a shot to win it at the buzzer, but missed giving KC another trip to East Lansing.
"We worked our butts off. We did everything that we needed to do...I'm so proud of us," KC's Emmlyn Geers exclaimed after the tough win at Otsego High.
The Kent City semi-final will be played at 2pm Thursday at the Breslin Center.
