Teacher Fired For Giving Zeros To Students Who Didn’t Do Work
A Florida teacher is claiming that she was fired because she was giving her students zeros when they didn't turn in their work. If you had to re-read that sentence, I don't blame you. I did a double take when I read the headline too. Aren't you supposed to not get credit when you don't do the work?
That's not what the West Gate K-8 School in Port St. Lucie, Florida is saying. According to Mrs. Tirado, the teacher who was fired, the school was asking her to give students who didn't turn in their homework at 50%. Mrs. Tirado refused to do so and was terminated. She left this note for students on her whiteboard.
“Bye kids, Mrs. Tirado loves you and wishes you the best in life! I have been fired for refusing to give you a 50% for not handing anything in. <3 Mrs. Tirado.”
Mrs. Tirado has been a teacher for 17 years but had just started at West Gate K-8 a year ago and had been butting heads with the administration about their "no zeros policy" since she began.
