Superstitions And Folklore In The Upper Peninsula
There are many superstitions and folklore regarding Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Several Yoopers shared some I had never heard of.
The Upper Peninsula
The Upper Peninsula is where the first settlers arrived in Michigan. French missionary Jacques Marquette landed in Sault Ste. Marie in 1668 and the U.P. is where Michigan got its start.

Since the Upper Peninsula has the longest history with settlers it would only make sense that it would have the oldest superstitions and folklore stories. Someone recently reached out online asking Yoopers to share some of those stories.

Superstitions And Folklore In The Upper Peninsula
A poster on the Upper Peninsula Reddit page recently asked people to share superstitions and folklore about the U.P. Below are the ones that stuck out to me on the thread:
I have seen the Paulding Lights in Paulding, Michigan. They say it has been debunked but I took a video camera and I never saw car headlights off in the distance do anything like what I filmed.
Everyone who owns a metal detector just got excited.
There are many reports of strange crafts flying in the Upper Peninsula.
That piece of folklore may be more believable than a UFO or a wall of silver.
I'm pretty certain that is a direct quote from the Gordon Lightfoot song "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald," but a great quote nonetheless.
Somebody better tell Geraldo Rivera about where Hoffa is buried.
Here is one I have never heard of and I'll make sure not to stay in a cabin near Bay Cliff.
It would be fun to try and find that place.
I've never heard that one before so I'll take this poster's word for it.
This Reddit poster should write a book.
I'll make sure I hear a whippoorwill before walking around at night in the U.P.
