Extremely strong thunderstorms ripped through portions of West Michigan on Saturday, leaving some pretty significant damage.

Strong winds knocked down trees and power lines, leaving thousands with no power. Consumers energy expects most to be resorted by late Monday night.

The hardest hit was Muskegon County with 25,835 sitting in the dark. Mecosta with 12,918, Kent 12,569, Ionia 4,799, Oceana 1,985, Newaygo 1,499, Mason 1,009, and Ottawa 594.

 

The Damage

There were reports that funnel clouds were spotted, no actual tornado touchdowns were reported. 80-mile-per-hour straight winds are responsible for most of the damage, including ripping part of Kent City High School's gym roof off.

 

What's Next?

WZZM reports that more showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and this evening, with temperatures being fairly mild in the mid 60s.

Heavy rain between today, tonight and tomorrow could cause flooding along the Grand River.
