A family was enjoying Friday afternoon on Lake Michigan in South Haven when they spotted a young deer struggling in the water.

Fox 17 reports that Heide Fuessel and her family were about a mile north of the shore near the South Haven pier when her nephew noticed the deer, telling her husband, "Uncle Brett, stop the boat. I just saw a deer on the water".

The family is from Mokena, Illinois, but has a summer home in Southwest Michigan.

Fuessel says they were too high up in the boat to reach the deer, so instead helped guide him back to land.

She says, "With my husband navigating the Baja 29 Outlaw, he was able to steer the deer back to shore. We were too high out of the water to try and lift him up. He made it safely and collapsed on shore,  but then made his way up and took off. "
