Sextortion is a crime that continues to grow online and in some cases, victims commit suicide. A Kent County man allegedly died as a result of sextortion and a man has been indicted.

What is Sextortion?

Sextortion is a form of extortion that is a growing crime online and through apps. Sextortion is a broad category of sexual exploitation involving coercion, and threats of releasing sexual images or information to get money in return.

Sextortion is another form of blackmail but the difference is it is sexual information or images used to extort money or sexual favors from the victim. Most criminals are using social media and text messages to trap their victims. A criminal will often pose as a young girl or boy to coerce victims to send nude photos that will later be used against them. Victims are sometimes threatened by someone saying they will post the photos on their socials or even their place of work. This gets even more tricky when the victim is married and wants to keep their online behaviors a secret.

Kent County Man Allegedly Committed Suicide Because of Sextortion

A Kent County man died by suicide on August 4, 2023, after becoming a victim of sextortion.

This particular sextortion case only went on for 2 days after the Kent County man made a connection with what he thought was an 18-year-old woman on a dating app. The Kent County man thought he was talking with a young woman but in all actuality, it was another man pretending. The two's conversations then turned into text messaging. The Kent County man then received an explicit photo from the imposter who then claimed to be the young girl's grandparents saying he was a pedophile. The imposter threatened to expose him as a pedophile to his family unless he paid up. Unfortunately, the Kent County man took his own life.

According to WOOD, 35-year-old Glenn Daeward Boyd from South Carolina has been indicted on seven counts of attempted extortion, stalking, and five counts of wire fraud involving the sextortion of the Kent County man.
