Sextortion is another form of blackmail but the difference is it is sexual information or images used to extort money or sexual favors from the victim. Most criminals are using social media and text messages to trap their victims. A criminal will often pose as a young girl or boy to coerce victims to send nude photos that will later be used against them. Victims are sometimes threatened by someone saying they will post the photos on their socials or even their place of work. This gets even more tricky when the victim is married and wants to keep their online behaviors a secret.

This particular sextortion case only went on for 2 days after the Kent County man made a connection with what he thought was an 18-year-old woman on a dating app. The Kent County man thought he was talking with a young woman but in all actuality, it was another man pretending. The two's conversations then turned into text messaging. The Kent County man then received an explicit photo from the imposter who then claimed to be the young girl's grandparents saying he was a pedophile. The imposter threatened to expose him as a pedophile to his family unless he paid up. Unfortunately, the Kent County man took his own life.
