UPDATE 11/20/23 The ice-skating season at Rosa Parks Circle downtown Grand Rapids is delayed one week due to warmer weather expected this week.

The rink is now slated to open Thursday, Nov. 30, weather permitting. The rink at 135 Monroe Center St. NW will be open daily, weather permitting, through February 25.

Ice Skating Season at Rosa Parks Circle 2023

The City of Grand Rapids has announced that the ice rink at Rosa Parks Circle opens at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 24, 2023.

The rink at 135 Monroe Center St. NW will be open daily, weather permitting, through February 25.

Those wanting to ice skate can walk-up or reserve skate times online. One person can reserve a skate time for up to six household members. Reservations are free and skaters pay upon arrival.

Cost to skate at Rosa Parks Circle Ice Rink is $2 for those 17 years old and younger and $4 for adults 18 and older. Skate rental is included with admission.

Reservations for the first two weeks of the season will open on Nov. 17 at 8 a.m. here. The City of GR says additional dates will become available up to two weeks in advance starting November 27.

In addition to open skating, the rink will host events throughout the winter, including the annual tree lighting on Dec. 1, noon to 8p.m.

This year's event will include:

  • The Grand Rapids Ballet will have characters from the Nutcracker
  • There will be open-skate at Rosa Parks Circle and s'mores to roast
  • Gerald R. Ford Airport will have a table
  • Country Fresh will bring Ruthie their statue cow mascot
  • The Home Depot Kids Workshop
  • The Western Michigan University Skate Team will perform
  • The Golden Tiger Kung Fu group will do a martial arts demonstration
  • Soldadera Coffee will have a table

The Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) will be at the GRFD booth accepting donations of:
-Socks
-Handwarmers
-Hats
-Gloves

Want more outdoor winter fun? The Parks and Recreation department also plans to once again host snowshoeing, fat tire biking and other winter recreation at Indian Trails Golf Course, as well as free sled rentals at city parks through its GR Outside division when weather permits.
