Costco Made Bank Off Michiganders’ Love Of Pumpkin Pie This Thanksgiving
It's always a wonder to me how we can stuff our faces during Thanksgiving dinner and still have room for dessert, aka one of the many pies our guests bought. I'm talking about apple pie, cherry pie, chocolate banana pudding (a curious but wonderful choice), and more.
But no pie is more iconic than a pumpkin pie from Costco, a 12-inch, 56-ounce beauty that is always delicious. While I know pumpkin pie is a hit in my house, apparently it is routinely America's choice for a pie because Costco sells an insane amount of pumpkin pies every year, totaling over 1 million in one week.

Costco's Pie Totals
Costco's pumpkin pies are a certified hit every year. The company's then-CFO, Richard Galanti, reported that in the three days before Thanksgiving 2023, it sold "more than 4 million pies in the U.S.," with 2.9 million of those being pumpkin pies.
While Costco has not released official numbers for 2024, I spoke to a couple of employees at multiple locations and did some digging online.
Here's what I learned:
- Around the Midwest, 1.5 million pies were sold in the last 4 weeks.
- Most pies are sold Monday-Wednesday before Thanksgiving, with 500,000 pumpkin pies sold around the Midwest in these three days.
- Around the US, nearly 3 million pies were sold from Monday to Wednesday.

Keep in mind these are just Pumpkin Pies. That doesn't include apple or pecan totals. If these pies are selling for ~$6 a pie, Costco is making $18 million off pies alone.
