Michigan has an outsized pizza legacy for a state 4,610 miles from Italy. One of its cornerstones is Buddy’s Pizza, which traces back to 1946, when its pizza was baked in blue steel pans sourced from local automotive suppliers because traditional baking pans were scarce. Buddy’s later opened its first official restaurant in 1953.

Michigan’s first official pizza restaurant opened on the west side of the state in Grand Haven. In 1949, Gus Fricano founded Fricano’s Pizza Tavern, a landmark that remains open and serving customers today.

Michigan is also home to four of the 15 largest pizza chains in the United States: Domino’s, Little Caesars, Hungry Howie’s, and Jet’s. This rise is partly due to waves of Italian and other immigrant communities settling in the state, alongside Detroit’s booming automotive industry, which fostered a large blue-collar workforce that favored affordable, filling meals like pizza. Together, these forces helped turn Michigan into a breeding ground for pizza giants.

Not every pizzeria grows into a national chain, but many independent shops in the Mitten State have been family-run and thriving for generations.

A few years ago, I was ice fishing in Cadillac, and since I knew I’d be stuck on the ice for at least eight hours, I ordered a pizza from Pizza Plus to keep me fueled for the day. The pizza was great, but I had no idea the place had been around since 1964.

Several years ago Pizza Plus of Cadillac had a commercial produced. It wasn't the best graphics, music, or singer, but it was full of charm and one thing for sure is the pizzeria got its phone number across in the ad.

You have to love the commercial for its charm, but if you ever get to Cadillac, make sure and grab a pizza at Pizza Plus, it will be well worth the trip.
