It isn't an early holiday light show or a leftover Halloween stunt. It is part of Operation Green Light, a way to support local veterans and show appreciation for their service and sacrifice.

What Is Operation Green Light?

Operation Green Light encourages local governments, businesses, and neighbors to swap out a standard light bulb for a green one during the week leading up to Veterans Day, running November 4 through November 11, 2026.

The concept started locally in New York in 2021 before spreading nationwide in 2022 with support from the National Association of Counties. Kent County adopted Operation Green Light in 2023.

Why the Color Green?

Beyond serving as a visual nod of thanks, the color carries a specific meaning. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, green symbolizes hope, renewal, and forward movement, signaling to service members transitioning back to civilian life that their community sees and supports them.

Nearly 25,000 veterans live in Kent County. Putting a green bulb on your porch is a quick way to show support, but the campaign also gets the word out about Kent County Veterans Services. It helps local veterans and their families realize there is a county office right down the road that can help them with VA benefits, emergency financial aid, and healthcare year-round.

How to Get a Free Green Lightbulb

Joining in does not have to cost you anything. Kent County Veterans Services paired up with The Light Bulb Company in Kentwood to distribute free green bulbs to local households (limit one per household, while supplies last).

Starting October 1, 2026, pick up a free bulb at:

  • Any Kent District Library (KDL) Branch
  • Sparta Carnegie Township Library (80 N. Union Street, Sparta)
  • Kent County Veterans Services (836 Fuller Avenue NE, Grand Rapids)

If you miss out on a free bulb, you can pick up a green LED at almost any local hardware store. Most importantly, if you or a veteran you know needs help with benefits or resources, reach out to Kent County Veterans Services directly at (616) 632-5722.
