Minimum Wage Goes Up in Michigan

Minimum wage has now gone up in Michigan and will continue annually until 2030.

According to WOOD, starting Wednesday January 1, minimum wage for Michigan workers went up 20 cents to $9.65 per hour. The wage will continue to rise each year until it reaches $12 per hour in 2030.

Originally the plan was to the wage up to $12 per hour by 2022 but the Republicans allowed business lobbyist to get them to move it to 2030.

The increase will affect large and small business's. If you work at a bar or restaurant you will get an 8 cent increase for a total of $3.67 per hour plus tips.

Meral Topcu of Grand Rapids said, "its not enough, definitely not enough. People are working two and three jobs just to make ends meets. It has to be at least $15, if not more."

Topcu went onto say, "I was a poor student for a long time so I definitely understand not making ends meet but I was working on my education. So I knew there was a way to get out of that but lots of people do not have the luxury so we definitely need to take care of our people."

The wage will continue to rise each year until $12 is met. My guess by the time 2030 hits, it won't be near enough of an increase.
