Located in Oak Park, Ernie’s opened in 1955 as a neighborhood grocery store run by Ernie Hassan’s grandfather. Ernie grew up working there before taking over and transforming it into the sandwich haven it is today — while keeping touches of the past, like family photos and walls adorned with newspaper clippings, awards, and thank-you notes from satisfied customers.

He’s known for his signature “Hey, Baby!” greeting and sandwiches "made with love". They are stacked high with freshly sliced meats, cheese, and crisp veggies. The Ernie Special is a fan favorite, piled with turkey, ham, roast beef, cheese, and all the fixings. Other standouts include the Italian Stallion, Turkey Club, and Veggie Delight.
