Welcome to Michigan…and OMG Fish Flies Have Taken Over this Welcome Center Rest Area
A traveler recently captured this photo of an unbelievable swarm of fish flies at the Monroe Welcome Center on Interstate 75.
The photo was uploaded to the Trucker forum on reddit asking what this hoard of insect was. Turns out they're fishflies. According to Wikipedia,
Fishflies lay their eggs upon vegetation overhanging streams, whence the larvae, as soon as hatched, drop into the water, and go about preying upon aquatic animals. When ready to transform to pupae, they crawl out upon the bank and are then found in cavities under stones or even under the bark of trees.
Elsewhere in Michigan, midge bugs create dense swarms that look like a tornado full of bugs, like this one captured on M-35 in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in the spring of 2017.
