Lovefood.com went on a Michigan to find the themed restaurants in each state delivering one-of-a-kind experiences and "excellent food with a side order of escapism." To determine the list, the foodie publication took into account reviews, awards, and the experiences of their team.
Lovefood's pick for Michigan's best themed restaurant is the Bavarian Inn in Frankenmuth.
The business was first founded as Union House Hotel in 1888 by Theodore Fischer. He later renamed it “Fischer’s Hotel". The Zehnder family bought it in the 1950s and transformed it into the Bavarian Inn, in honor of Frankenmuth's German heritage.
The Zehnders instituted the authentic Bavarian exterior-stucco walls, woodcarving, flower boxes, and German entrees served by “Bavarian” costumed servers that the restaurant is well-known for.
More than a restaurant, the Bavarian Inn is a whole complex! There's Emilie Eis Ice Cream and Candy Shop, stores, and a hotel. There are actually actually multiple restaurants too, including Oma's Restaurant and Michigan on Main Bar and Grill.
At the main Bavarian Inn, you'll find all-you-can-eat family-style meals, perhaps most famous being the Fried Chicken. There's also Kasseler Rippchen (smoked pork loin), Schnitzel (breaded loin of pork) and Sauerbraten (marinated roast beef), and so much more. The Bavarian Inn claims to have fed more than 20 million guests!
You'll find tons more to check out in Little Bavaria, as Frankenmuth is also home to Bronner's Christmas Store, the Frankenmuth Historical Museum, Bavarian Belle Riverboat, and one of the best skating rinks in the country.
Here is Lovefood's praise for the Bavarian Inn
One of Michigan’s most famous and unusual restaurants is the Bavarian Inn, whose menu is inspired by the traditional cuisine of the southeast German state. Opened in 1888 in the Bavarian-style town of Frankenmuth, the venue specializes in all-you-can-eat, family-style German meals. Customers praise the inn’s old-world charm and tasty food; entrées like schnitzel and smoked meats come with an array of delicious sides including noodles, potato cheese puffs, and sauerkraut.
