As the Lighthouse Capital of the US with over 129 lighthouses around the state, more than any other state in the country. Even Maine, though it fraudulently calls itself "The Lighthouse State". Though lighthouses are not relied on the way they were used to back in the day, many of the lighthouses are still in service and rely on volunteers to keep the lighthouses in shape.

The best part is? Anyone can be a lighthouse keeper and stay at the lighthouses. If you've ever wondered what it was like to live in these silent guardians of the Lakes, now is your chance. The State of Michigan is now taking applications for volunteer lighthouse keepers for summer 2025.

Tawas Point State Park

One of Michigan's most historic lighthouses is the Tawas Point Lighthouse along Lake Huron at Tawas State Park. It was in operation from 1876 to 2016 when the Coast Guard turned off the light in the tower in favor of a modern light on a pole closer to the coast. However, like many of the lighthouses around the state, lighthouses are still respected for their historical value.

So, the State of Michigan offers volunteers the chance to live at the lighthouse for two weeks and a total of $250/person in exchange for providing upkeep, tours, and other tasks to preserve the lighthouse. The lighthouses are updated with modern appliances, so it is a comfortable experience.
