Because of Michigan's stand-your-ground law, you can use your firearm with lethal force in self-defense or the defense of another if you believe death, great bodily harm, or sexual assault will take place. You have to immediately notify authorities when this happens, stay put, and make sure the gun stays at the scene. A Michigan man had part of these laws correct when his firearm was recently discharged but his friend got arrested because he didn't follow the law.

According to MLive, a man in Bay County, Michigan, who legally owns a .45-caliber handgun was attempting to put the weapon in his waistband or holster when it accidentally went off shooting himself in the leg in the parking lot of a Kroger grocery store. The injured man was taken to the hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury. It was what happened before the police arrived that is so bizarre.

A friend who was with the man who shot himself accidentally, happened to be on parole grabbed the gun, and fled the scene. Maybe it was a natural reaction since the man who grabbed the gun, was already on parole and had been convicted of a variety of crimes but this series of bad decisions now has him in trouble.

First, a man on parole in Michigan cannot possess a firearm. Deputies located the man who admitted to hiding the gun were arrested and jailed on violating his parole, and felony possession of a firearm. None of this would have happened if he had stayed at the scene and attended to his friend. With prior felony convictions, the parolee may be looking at serious further time behind bars.
