If you get a call about jury duty that seems off, it probably is.

Recently the Kent County Sheriff's Office told people to be on alert for a jury duty scam circulating in the area.

On February 11, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel reissued her consumer alert about scammers impersonating government officials as residents continue to report a missed jury duty scam across the state -- most recently here in West Michigan

Jury Duty Phone Scam in West Michigan

Here's how it works:

You get a call from someone claiming to work for the Kent County Sheriff's Office.

The person says you missed jury duty and now there is a warrant for your arrest. The scammer then demands a "bond" payment to get rid of the warrant.

It's totally not legit.

The Kent County Sheriff's Office reminds everyone that it, nor any other law enforcement agency, will ever requests payments for any criminal matters like this.

They'll also never meet your at your home or business and ask you to buy gift cards to pay off a warrant.

What To Do If You Get a Jury Duty Scam Call

If you get a scam call:

  • Do not provide payment or personal information.
  • Contact Kent County Sheriff's dispatch center at 616-632-6100 or your local police department to verify the identity of the person claiming to be a police officer or detective.
