James Gunn Says You Shouldn’t Expect Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers to Crossover
Everyone has assumed that, at some point towards the end of this current Marvel Cinematic Universe, the paths of the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers would cross. Yes, one superhero team is busy protecting Earth, and the other occupied in outer space, it makes too much sense to not have them meet up in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ right? Never mind the “it makes sense” part, we just really want this to happen. Well, we might never happen according to ‘Guardians’ director James Gunn who warns fans about making such assumptions.
Gunn spoke to Screen Junkies and was asked about the current changes in the ‘Avengers’ franchise, what that means for the Guardians and whether we’ll see the two superhero teams join forces:
We really are separate from the Avengers, and I don’t think people should assume too many things about the Guardians play in all these. We have our own galaxy to take care of. We have our own galaxy to save. Earth is the Avengers’ province. Thinking that everything is going to come together in a perfect way is not necessarily the way it’s going to happen.
It makes some sense, what Gunn is saying—they don’t to be overdependent on the Avengers for their own success—but, what is the point of having this expanded universe of Marvel characters if the Avengers world is only going to stay on Earth and the Guardians of the Galaxy are only going to stay in space. Thanos is in the first ‘Guardians’ movie. Eventually, he will be coming to Earth or the Avengers will be going to space and eventually they will fight. This is happening. To not have the Guardians be a part of that seems like a major missed opportunity, both creatively and commercially. Who doesn’t want to see Iron Man and Star-Lord or Thor and Rocket working off each other?
If Gunn was specifically talking about ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ then we definitely agree with him. The Avengers/Guardians crossover needs to happen at some point, but probably not until at least Part 1 or Part 2 of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. Then, all the Marvel heroes will need to come together to stop a force as powerful as Thanos, the Guardians included.
‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ opens in theaters on May 5, 2017 and ‘Avengers 2’ opens in theaters on May 1, 2015.
