Compared to just 5 years ago, Michiganders are paying a lot more just to get to and from work. Here's where things stood in 2021 vs. today.
Insurance: From Pricey to 'Seriously?'
Bankrate reports the average Michigan driver pays about $3,200 per year for full coverage in 2026. Back in 2021, estimates hovered around $2,600 annually.

So yes, it's gone up... but more importantly, it never went down. Michigan still sits near the top nationally for insurance costs.
Gas Prices: Then vs. Now
As of April 28, 2026, Michigan drivers are paying about $4.18 per gallon, according to AAA. In 2021, gas prices peaked at around $3.27-$3.33 per gallon.

Gas Taxes: The Biggest Shift
Here's where things really changed. In 2021, the state gas tax per gallon was 26.3 cents per gallon. As of January 1, 2026, that rate nearly doubled for Michiganders to 52.4 cents per gallon. While the 6% sales tax was removed at the same time, gas prices have risen for many drivers.
The average driver uses about 500 gallons per year, which means that in 2021, you paid about $131 in gas tax. That has skyrocketed to $262, doubling in just 5 years.
The Bottom Line
Insurance is still hovering around $3K, gas is about $1 more per gallon, and the fuel taxes have nearly doubled. Compared to 2021, most Michigan drivers are paying hundreds more per year, before even factoring in repairs needed from driving on roads that looked like they lost a fight.
Driving in Michigan isn't just a means of transportation anymore. It's a financial commitment... with heated seats.
