Michigan’s Tunnel of Trees is Absolutely Stunning in the Fall Season

There really isn’t anything like a slow, afternoon drive, or crisp morning drive in Michigan during the fall. Something about just a slight nip of cooler weather as you wind around the curvy roads in the country, looking at the foliage is completely unmatched anywhere else in the country – Maybe even the world. 

It’s one of the state’s not-so-best-kept secrets, but yet, so many people have yet to experience this incredible fall treat in the state.

It’s the absolute perfect Fall activity, and it’s easy enough. If you’re looking for a fall color tour, you absolutely need to put the Tunnel of Trees on your bucket list. 

The scenic byway north of Harbor Springs is up north. So maybe a nice, relaxing weekend trip, or a long one-day trip for those of us down south. But man, is it worth the drive. 

Even outside of Fall, the drive has incredible deep green canopies in the Spring and Summer from old growth, hardwood trees. And with the humidity coming in off of Lake Michigan, the sunlight will often shoot literally beams of light between the leaves and branches, down onto the road. 

But of course, this is Michigan, and we’re talking about Fall. This is when the Tunnel of Trees truly shines its brightest.  

Starting in Harbor Springs, follow M-119  through a wooded 20-mile scenic drive north, but take your time. The colors can be very distracting for passengers, and drivers alike. 

Once you get to Cross Village, you’ve successfully crossed through Michigan’s Tunnel of Trees. Now... it’s time to turn around and do it again.
