The sport of roller derby hit a tight of popularity in the 70s and 80s, but over the last few decades, we’ve seen a resurgence of the sport which is incredibly taxing. it’s an incredibly physically demanding sport that requires equal parts, toughness, and skill.

For a while, now in Kalamazoo, we’ve had our own team, but now Battle Creek will once again have a women’s team of their own led by Rachel Ostrander. This will be the first battle creek, roller derby team since the serial killer roller derby team broke up in 2020.

But as Rachel will tell you herself from the conversation she had with the Battle Creek Inquirer, she’s looking forward to not only getting back out there but helping those who want to be a part of it on any level.

I decided that if nobody else wanted to start a team I was going to do it myself, so here we are. We are extremely welcoming in that you don’t need to have any kind of experience at all, we’ll teach you to skate. You get to come and watch women hit each other really, really hard and absolutely knock the snot out of each other. I have never heard anyone say that they weren’t interested in that, not once.

When's The First Skate?

The first time to catch these ladies of the Battle Creek Roller Derby team in action is at the Battle Creek Cereal Bowl on June 11th at Kellogg Arena, with many dates listed this year on their website.
