This Halloween is the 100-year anniversary of the day Harry Houdini died in Detroit, Michigan.

Harry Houdini made a career out of escaping situations that looked impossible to survive. But away from the stage, the legendary magician had another mission: exposing fake mediums who took advantage of grieving families.

His final curtain call came in Michigan, where he died on Halloween in 1926.

Harry Houdini’s Mission to Expose Scammers

Houdini knew a thing or two about fooling an audience. That also made him especially good at spotting someone else’s tricks.

In his later years, he used those skills to investigate mediums who claimed they could communicate with the dead. He attended séances in disguise and publicly exposed the methods behind supposedly supernatural encounters.

For Houdini, the problem went beyond a convincing illusion. These people were taking money from grieving customers who desperately wanted to hear from someone they loved. Entertaining an audience was one thing. Exploiting that kind of heartbreak was another.

Houdini’s final weeks brought a painful series of setbacks.

On October 11, 1926, faulty equipment struck his leg while he was being shackled into his Chinese Water Torture Cell during a performance in Albany, New York. He fractured his left ankle but continued touring against his doctor’s advice.

Then came an unusual encounter in Montreal.

On October 22, Houdini was resting on a couch in his dressing room at the Princess Theater when a student named J. Gordon Whitehead asked whether he could withstand hard punches to his stomach.

According to a witness account reported by History.com, Houdini said he could. Whitehead then delivered several powerful blows before the magician braced himself. Houdini was left in considerable pain.

The punches became a major part of the story surrounding his death, but their role remains disputed.  PBS’s American Experience notes that Houdini likely had appendicitis before the encounter.

Houdini's Final Performance in Detroit

By the time Houdini reached Detroit, he was seriously ill. Despite severe abdominal pain and a doctor’s recommendation that he go to the hospital, he insisted on performing.

On October 24, 1926, he took the stage at Detroit’s Garrick Theater. It would be his last show.

Doctors later operated and discovered that his appendix had ruptured. The resulting infection proved fatal. Houdini died in Detroit on October 31, 1926, at age 52. His official cause of death was peritonitis caused by a ruptured appendix.

For a man who built his legend escaping death, it was a haunting final chapter, and one forever connected to Michigan.

This Marshall Woman Has The Most Impressive Halloween Display In West Michigan

When Holly Harnden and her late husband closed on the Victorian-style home at 401 E Mansion St in Marshall, MI, on Halloween of 2003, it was the manifestation of a woman who had a dream and achieved it. This is her way of doing it, as she also sets up a similar, and as she describes, possibly more elaborate, Christmas decoration display every year as well.
