Surprisingly Amazon Workers On Strike! Will This Spoil Christmas?
**UPDATED 12/20/24**
Fox17 reported early this morning that West Michigan Teamsters Local 406 joined Amazon employees at the Caledonia distribution center to go out on strike. Drivers, teachers, auto workers and union members alike made their voices heard, braving the snow and the cold, for a fight that’s extending globally.
This certainly isn't very welcome news for the holiday season. Thousands of Amazon warehouse workers and drivers just went on strike!
👇 BELOW: WHAT WAS POPULAR FROM CHRISTMAS PAST?👇
It is a crazy situation just before Christmas and Hanukkah as the Teamsters Union announced that thousands of Amazon workers across the U.S. are on strike over a contract that guarantees wages, health care, and safety, according to CNN.
But this is a murky situation because only about 10,000 employees went out on strike, and not across America, but at a facility in New York City, a facility in Atlanta, three in Southern California, one in San Francisco and one in Skokie, Illinois, which is located just outside of Chicago, NBC News.com says.
Amazon employees over 1.5 million people, so the 10,000 is a small, but could be a significant amount that just may disrupt Christmas deliveries.
What about Grand Rapids?
Now that our fulfillment center is on strike as well, it's totally unclear how this will affect deliveries.
The other murky part of this whole story is Amazon's claim that the workers don't actually work for them but for a third party employer. Also, Amazon says that even though the Teamsters claim these members, they are not represented by them at all. Are you following this? It's crazy. Who's on first?
Who!
Our news partner, Fox17 reported that according to the National Retail Federation, Amazon is the United States' second-largest retailer, only trailing Walmart. In 2023, Amazon had over $250.1 billion in retail sales in the U.S.
Amazon has not said how Thursday's strike could impact deliveries just six days before Christmas and the start of Hanukkah. Amazon says it offers an average hourly pay of over $22 for customer fulfillment and transportation, and pharmacy roles.
So, the deeper question here is will Barbie arrive on time from Santa?
Right now, maybe not!
