Michigan Sees Below Freezing Low Temperatures for the Final Weekend of August
Remember just a few days ago when Michigan was seeing extreme heat and humidity when heat indexes soared above 110 degrees? What a difference a week makes. For the final weekend of August in 2023, several locations in the state saw low temperatures below freezing.
The National Weather Service in Gaylord posted to Facebook on Sunday morning (August 27):
It was chilly last night! Out of the 148 low temperature reports we received, guess what the coldest report was.
Many guesses and observations came in including 33 near Onaway, 38 in Cheboygan and Gaylord, 37 in Houghton Lake, 31 in Pellston while the lake moderated Traverse City stayed in the 40.
According to NWS the lowest confirmed reading was 31 degrees in Atlanta, the seat of Montmorency County. A below-freezing reading in the supposed 'dog days' of summer.
The winner was 31° F in Atlanta, MI from our 25 county area of responsibility. A couple reports colder than this were recorded in the western U.P.
Upper Peninsula Below Freezing Summer Lows
So what about those frosty Upper Peninsula lows? NWS Marquette posted:
We had a low temperature of 38 this morning here at the NWS office in Negaunee Township, good enough for frost on the roof, but no frost on the grass. Many locations across western Upper Michigan had temperatures well down into the 30s at sunrise. Several locations were at or below freezing, including at the Gogebic-Iron County Airport.

Frosty conditions were observed away from the Lake Superior shoreline this morning and several sites even dipped below freezing! Here are this morning's coldest temperatures observed by our cooperative observers and automated stations across Upper Michigan.
The coldest spots in the Upper Peninsula overnight were 27 in Baraga, 30 in Kenton, 30 at the airport in Ironwood and 31 in Wakefield.
Did Michigan Set a Record Low for Temperatures?
No, the UP did not set any record low temperatures, at least using the NWS's records. The low temperature at the NWS office for the region which is in Negaunee, the low was 38 and the record for the date was 35 set in 1968.
