Sadly, there have been way too many accidents and deaths in highway work zones. For whatever reason, drivers simply are not paying attention to speed limits in the construction areas and just breezing through in total disregard for the workers. It's the workers who are being injured.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

One thing is Michigan lawmakers are pushing legislation that would require new drivers to complete a work zone safety course before obtaining a driver's license, according to Fox47 News.

There has been a big public and lawmaker outcry about several deaths in the work zone construction areas. "Already this summer, two MDOT workers were killed in a crash on US-127."

So, a couple of bills have been introduced in the legislature that would make it mandatory for new drivers to take a work zone driving safety course.

The ATSSA, American Traffic Safety Services Association, has always wondered why Michigan doesn't have something like this in effect as other states do.

The problem here is that these accidents and deaths are caused by already licensed drivers. So how do you hope to make an impact if the course is for new drivers only?

We all notice how close the workers are sometimes to fast moving traffic. And we see drivers paying absolutely no attention to them, work zone speed safety, and more.  Care, consideration and awareness should be a top priority when driving through any work zone, period!

With driver's education seemingly not quite adequate, legislators and department of safety folks are concerned and hope, at least, this possible new law would have an impact to create more safety for all of the construction workers.

WHAT'S UP WITH THE NEW LAWS?

The things that do move slow here in Michigan are our legislators, so we will see. The current bills have to first get a vote in the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Zzzzzz!
