Every time I drive under the new pedestrian bridge on 28th Street with my toddler in the backseat, I can’t help but get excited. For months, my son and I have watched it slowly take shape. Finally, it’s opening for the public to enjoy this weekend.

The City of Wyoming is celebrating the grand opening of the pedestrian bridge on Saturday, September 27, with a big community event from 9 am to noon.

There will be a ribbon-cutting, food trucks, music, and plenty of family-friendly fun as neighbors explore this new connection that links Pinery Park to the businesses and activities on the north side of 28th Street.

While this bridge is cool, it’s not just a nice thing to walk on for fun. This bridge is part of a new trail connection that even links up with Grace Christian University and Wyoming’s trail network.

This means more options for walking, biking, and stroller-pushing without worrying about traffic whizzing by on one of West Michigan’s busiest streets.

As a mom, I’m already dreaming ahead to next summer. Just imagine standing on the bridge with my little one, looking down at the 28th Street Metro Cruise as hundreds of classic and custom cars roll beneath us.

That’s going to be a memory-maker, not just for families like mine, but for the whole community.

If you want to be part of history, this Saturday is your chance. The first 300 people to register for the Run, Walk, or Roll event, which is happening after the ribbon-cutting, will even get an official event t-shirt to celebrate the special day.

So lace up your sneakers, bring the kids, and let’s walk this bridge together for the very first time. Get details on their website.
