What To Do When Driving Near A School Bus

Stop for school buses: When a school bus is stopped with its red lights flashing and stop signs extended, all drivers must stop at least 20 feet away from the bus.

This applies to drivers in all lanes, including those traveling in the opposite direction.

Wait for the bus to move: Drivers should not proceed until the bus has turned off its red lights and stop sign and has started moving again.

Be cautious around school zones: Drivers should be extra cautious when driving near schools, as children may be crossing the street or walking on the sidewalk

What Not To Do When Driving Near A School Bus

Do not pass a stopped school bus: Passing a stopped school bus is illegal in Michigan and can result in a civil infraction, which carries a fine between $100 and $500.

Violators may also be required to perform community service or attend a driver improvement course.

Do not drive distracted: It is important to avoid distractions while driving, especially when near school buses or in school zones. This includes using a cell phone, eating, or applying makeup
