Mary Free Bed’s Halloween Event Brings Big Smiles to Little Patients
With spooky season in full swing, Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital made sure its youngest patients didn’t miss out on any of the Halloween magic. On Friday night, the hospital hosted its annual Trunk-or-Treat-style event, where it transformed part of its campus into a “Scare-apy Garden” filled with festive food, costumes, and plenty of sweet treats.
The event was organized by the Mary Free Bed Kids inpatient team, and it brought together hospital staff, families, and community partners who went all-out to make the evening unforgettable.
Dozens of decorated tables replaced the traditional “trunks,” each one staffed by smiling employees handing out candy and goodies to children making their way through the spooky setup.
“It’s to make sure that kids who are hospitalized have the same sort of accessibility and same sort of experience as every other kid on Halloween,” said Penny Adams, an occupational therapist who helps organize the event each year.
From a donut and cider bar to a specialty coffee station serving up “scream and sugar,” every detail was designed to bring joy and a touch of normalcy to families who might be spending the holiday in the hospital. Kids also enjoyed a bunny petting area, interactive games, and plenty of sensory-friendly Halloween fun.
One former patient even joined the festivities dressed as a Mary Free Bed physical therapist, which is truly the cutest tribute to the difference they make for those whose lives they touch.
Hosted with help from the Mary Free Bed Guild, Foundation, and SpartanNash, the event once again proved what makes Mary Free Bed so special: their deep commitment to care that goes far beyond medical treatment.
For patients and families facing some of the hardest moments of their lives, the hospital’s warmth and creativity make all the difference, especially when it comes wrapped in a little Halloween magic.
