After returning stronger this season, Iris Herrera brought Michigan pride to The Voice, singing her way to the Top 8.

Of all the singing competitions on television, "The Voice" is my favorite. I have always liked it better than the others because everyone, at any age, has a chance to compete and win.

Another thing I like about The Voice is that the judges cannot see the performers during the audition. This means the judges listen to the talent and the singer's ability to connect with them and the audience, and contestants are not selected based on their looks.

Iris Herrera is from Newaygo, Michigan. Herrera tried out for The Voice the previous season but didn't get a chair turn, but received great advice from the judges, who told her to come back.  Herrera returned and made it to the top 8, which is a huge accomplishment.

Herrera's unique reimagined version of "You Are My Sunshine" had several chairs turn, and she made the show with her second audition. For a 20-year-old singer, she sang like a 20-year veteran.

During the Battle Rounds, Herrera performed a duet with Simone Marijic and killed with her performance of Lizzy McApline's "Ceilings."

During the Knockout Rounds, Herrera did an amazing rendition of Ray LaMontagne's "Jolene." Her raspy voice and choice of vocal runs made it easy for Herrera to move on to the Live Rounds.

When Herrera performed in the Playoff Rounds, she tackled Chris Stapleton's "White Horse" with such confidence and poise that I wouldn't be surprised if he did invite her to join him at Van Andel Arena when he comes in June.

Herrera chose "Messy" by Lola Young for the Live Show, and she had another great performance. The top 4 finalists were announced, leaving one final spot for Herrera to compete again.

Herrera tackled Elton John's "Rocket Man" for her final attempt to move on to the finals of The Voice. Herrera must have a classic rock soul because she excelled on those legendary tracks.

Herrera didn't make it to the finals, but her performances, talent, heart, and ability to make a legendary song her own have everyone in Newaygo proud to have her as a neighbor. Herrera showed she was an excellent ambassador to Michigan, and I'm sure every Michigander felt just as proud as her neighbors and family are. Great job, young lady.
