Ionia Co. Health Department Shuts Down Section of Belding Plant
The Ionia County Health Department slaps a court order on a plant in Belding, Michigan, and shuts down the division that makes acid. No...not that kind of acid.
According to WOOD, Kassouni Manufacturing Inc. has been ordered by the court to temporarily cease making trichloroisocyanuric acid. The rest of the facility is still allowed to continue business as usual.
This temporary restraining order is due to someone throwing away trichloroisocyanuric acid into a dumpster as trash and this wound up leading to a fire back on July 19.
This isn't the first time fire fighters have been called to KMI since other incidents over the past few years have occurred at the plant involving trichloroisocyanuric acid. This particular acid only needs a little water that can cause a fire which then releases a toxic potentially deadly chlorine gas.
The health department is asking that KMI address safety issues in handling the acid or just stop using the acid all together.
KMI will have their day in the Ionla County Circuit Court August 12.
