As pickleball popularity continues to rise it is getting harder to find an open court not to mention getting rained out in the spring. A new indoor facility has just opened in GR.

What is Pickleball?

First, what the heck is pickleball? It is kind of like tennis meets ping pong played on a court about one-third the size of a full tennis court.

Two to four players can play pickleball at a time just like in tennis. Players hit a hollow plastic ball (the ball behaves similarly to a wiffle ball) over a 36-inch-high net using solid paddles similar to ping pong but everything is bigger. You can play the game indoors or outdoors and players hit the ball back and forth until someone breaks a rule of the game.

The only real difference between tennis and pickleball is there is a lot more heckling going on between players in pickleball. There is often loud music being played and players often try and hit the other players with the ball on purpose. Kind of makes it hard to defend.

I don't think I have ever seen an empty pickleball court in Grand Rapids. I have friends that play and they say it is very tough to get a court unless you book it way in advance. Looks like that may not be a problem for those who play in Grand Rapids anymore.

According to WOOD, the new indoor pickleball courts are found in a 21,000-foot building that is completely dedicated to the sport. The hours are great with them opening at 4 a.m. and staying open until midnight seven days a week.

Now you can't get rained or snowed out and you play pickleball all year long. If you would like to learn more and lock in a court, click here.
