ICE’s Shocking New Tool Could Cost Up to $20 Million

ICE agents are planning to spend up to $20 million on additional equipment designed not only to apprehend people suspected of violating immigration laws. Also, to deliver painful electric shocks to people who become combative.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents enforce federal laws related to immigration, border control, customs, and trade, with the goal of protecting public safety and national security.

For decades, ICE agents were most commonly associated with enforcement activities along the U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada borders. Today, however, they are increasingly being seen in rural communities and states far from the nation’s borders. While ICE has legal authority to operate nationwide, critics argue that its enforcement efforts are intended to be guided by specific, intelligence-driven targets rather than the broad geographic sweeps that communities across the country have reported witnessing.

ICE maintains that its enforcement operations are targeted, but online critics seen on Reddit continue to debate whether agents disproportionately avoid high-crime areas where suspects may be more likely to resist or fight back.

Heard of G.L.O.V.E.? ICE Plans to Use It

Although ICE agents are not considered a military force, they may be equipped with military-style gear and standard law-enforcement equipment, including firearms, body armor, and tactical gear for high-risk operations. Critics sometimes argue that the appearance and use of such equipment can create a militarized or authoritarian image.

WOOD TV8 reported that ICE plans to spend millions of dollars on devices known as the G.L.O.V.E., short for Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter. The gloves are designed to deliver painful electric shocks to individuals who become combative during apprehension.

One of the primary uses of the G.L.O.V.E. is reportedly to assist agents in removing uncooperative individuals from vehicles and residences, as well as moving them into and out of detention facilities.

Although the new device could help smaller agents maintain control over combative individuals, the American Civil Liberties Union has raised concerns that some agents could misuse it, particularly given allegations of improper use of other enforcement tools that have been captured on national television.
