Pepper Spray Banned At Canadian Border – What To Know
Visiting Canada? Leave your pepper spray at home or face fines and legal trouble at the border.
Is Pepper Spray Considered a Weapon in Canada?
Pepper spray is mainly used as a non-lethal self-defense tool. You can often see a small can or tube hanging from someone's key chain in case they get attacked. The pepper spray causes intense burning and stinging in the eyes, nose, and throat, leading to temporary blindness, difficulty breathing, and disorientation. This allows the user to escape a dangerous situation.
Law enforcement will use pepper spray to help with crowd control, subdue combative individuals, and manage potentially violent situations.
Pepper spray can also be used to deter aggressive animals, including dogs, bears, and wolves.
Pepper spray is legal in all 50 states for self-defense purposes, but some states have restrictions on its use, size, or purchase. Just because pepper spray is legal in the United States doesn't mean it's legal in other countries.
In Canada, pepper spray is illegal. Pepper spray is classified as a prohibited weapon, which means that if you plan to visit Canada, double-check your vehicle, luggage, and purse to ensure you're not accidentally transporting it into the country.

We even packed anything we thought would need to be looked at and put it on top so it was easy to find. We followed Canada's rules to a "T" and never had an issue.
