Michigan Hunters Apply For Tags to Hunt Certain Animals

You don't need to apply for a hunting tag for small game and deer. All you need is a hunter's safety card and a Michigan ID to purchase your hunting license. Since 2000, Michigan hunters have applied for a bear tag and have been selected to be able to purchase a bear hunting license. This is a way to manage the bear population.

The first Michigan elk hunts were discontinued after 1964 and 1965, and didn't resume until 1984. A lottery system was created in 1984 to award the right number of hunting tags to preserve Michigan's elk herd. The lottery system has worked, and the sport has grown ever since.

Applying for Michigan turkey tags began in 1965. Since then, turkeys have repopulated the Upper and Lower Peninsulas, allowing more hunters to enjoy the sport each season while harvesting the right number of birds to maintain a healthy flock.

Applying for hunting tags is nothing new in Michigan, but there is something new that could earn you an extra elk tag or give you a second option for applying for a bear permit.

How To Get 2 Michigan Elk Tags in One Season

In 2009, the DNR started the Pure Michigan Hunt. This was a contest to award hunters an extra opportunity to get licenses for elk, bear, spring and fall turkey, antlerless deer, and first-choice access to managed waterfowl areas

According to the DNR press release, now through June 1, hunters can apply for their elk and bear permits, and increase their chances if they also apply for the Pure Michigan Hunt. Last season, a Michigan hunter was awarded two elk tags and bagged two 6x6 bull elk by applying for both.
