Hardy Dam Road Shut Down For Ongoing Maintenance Work
Locals and visitors to Hardy Dam will need an alternate way across. The road across the dam is closed for a week or so to get repaved.
The Hardy Dam is located in Newaygo County and is 94 years old. The dam is visibly showing its age. The road over the dam will be closed for about a week and a half, so this could extend daily commutes by 15 to 30 minutes.
The Hardy Dam In Newaygo County
The building of the Hardy Dam and its power plant began in 1929 and was completed by the end of 1931. The dam impounds a reservoir with a surface area of 4,000 acres. Consumers Energy has been the owner since the beginning, until its recent sale for $1.
Many visitors come to camp, swim, fish, boat, and go mountain biking or hiking around the Hardy Pond. There are several campgrounds and boat launches on both sides of the dam, and many locals use the road that crosses the dam to commute each day.
As you can see in the photo above, the road that crosses the Hardy Dam is in pretty rough shape, so you can only imagine the condition of the 94-year-old structure underneath.

Hardy Dam Road Closed For a Re-Paving Project
On October 16, 2025, the road crossing the Hardy Dam will be closed to get repaved. Consumers Energy had previously talked about an auxiliary spillway and a splash wall being built, but for now, that is off the table since the dam was recently sold.

There are only three ways to detour around this closure: one is to drive to Croton and cross the Croton Dam from Croton-Hardy Drive, the second way is to exit U.S. 131 and head west on U.S. 20, and the third way is to travel on M-37 and head east on 40th Street.
